Summer at Edgewood

Summer school has begun, and summer camp and enrichment classes are in full swing!  It is always nice to see familiar Edgewood faces during the summer, but we also enjoy working with new students from other schools.

You will be receiving a mailer from Fairmont with information concerning the beginning of school and forms to complete.  Within the month, you willl also receive a mailer from the Edgewood campus with more specific information concerning our particular campus.  Please read through both of these mailers carefully and complete and sign all necessary forms and return them to Edgewood. There will be some calendars and schedules which you may want to tack up on your refrigerators for your convenience during the 2008-2009 school year!

Fairmont is making some improvements to the physical campus during these summer months, and we are eager to show these off when school resumes.

Spend time with your children and enjoy their company during these summer months. The first full day of school will be Tuesday, August 26th.  We look forward to seeing you at the end of August!

Running Out of Time!

Only 7 weeks left of school - we are running out of time!

May brings CTP4 testing (grades 1-8) at the beginning of the month and Mastery testing (grades 1-6) at the end of the month.  Junior high students will be gone during Travel Week: sxith graders go to Science Camp in the mountains, seventh graders to the Grand Canyon, and eighth graders to Washington D.C. and New York City.  We have assemblies, field trips, a 5th grade state fair, soccer, and the eighth grade musical GREASE.  Third trimester progress reports go home on Friday, May 9.  Despite the many activities, we are busy preparing your children for the next grade level and the future.

Congratulations are in order.  Mr. Hughes' Debate Team had a wonderful showing at the National Tournament with our team winning the best in the Inland Valley Debate League.  Mr. Hobbs' and Mrs. White's junior high science students won numerous awards at the OC Science Fair, with a record thirteen students going on to the state competition.  Edgewood won top school in the junior high division, with Alyssa Cook being the sweepstakes winner in junior high entries.  Our Academic Pentathlon teams (7th and 8th grade) both came in 2nd place in their division in Orange County, against the toughest competitors.  Over one hundred individual medals were brought home by Edgewood pentathletes.  Mrs. DeVane's art students are winning awards galore at the Youth Expo, Imagination Celebration, and several other art competitions.

We continue our commitment to stressing community service from our students.  Remind your junior high students of their commitments before promotion.  Homerooms are busily recycling, writing letters to servicemen, cleaning up beaches, etc.  We are proud of their efforts and their concern for others.

It was fun seeing so many of you at Fairmont Family Night at Angels Stadium.  Edgewood had a great turnout from families and staff!  Let's hope we have the same seats next year!

I thank you again for your support of the school and our effort to provide the best education possible.

April Brings ---!

Spring is here and along with it comes assessments, pentathlon, musicals, spelling bees, soccer, field trips, community service and a visit from the WASC accreditation committee.  During April and May, students from grades 1-6 will be assessed through Writing Proficiencies and Mastery testing, and students in grades 1-8 will be administered the CTP4 achievement tests.  Grades 1 and 3 will have musical performances in April, and grades 2 and 3 will compete in their annual spelling bees.  Soccer season continues through part of May, and we have Family Night at an Angels' game on Friday, April 18.  Our 7th and 8th grade pentathlon teams compete this coming Saturday.  Our junior kindergarten students visit the Strawberry Patch, while the fourth graders and parents pay a three-day visit to Sacramento.  Don't miss the Family Bingo Night sponsored by the Edgewood Campus Parent Association.  Junior high students have opportunities to add to their community service hours on two Saturdays of arranged activities.

Our self-study report has been accepted by the WASC accreditation committee, and they will be visiting us for four days in mid-April.  They will be touring the facilities, talking with staff, students, and parents.  Our hope is to earn another seven years of accreditation.

Summer program brochures are available.  Edgewood offers summer school, summer camp, and various enrichment classes throughout the summer.  If you have any questions, please feel free to speak with anyone in the front office or Mr. Leon or Mrs. Powell.

With only eleven weeks left of school, there is much to accomplish.  Help us to keep your children focused and poised to succeed.  Thank you for the past years' of support and kind words.

February - A Short Month but Very Busy!

When February is mentioned, most people think of Valentine's Day or President's Day.  At Fairmont, we think of Open House!  Please plan to join us on Friday, February 29th from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM.  The Edgewood staff is already beginning their preparations to make the evening very special.  Our theme this year is "An Enchanted Evening at Edgewood."

Note that there are a few days off during the short month of February.  Friday, February 1st, is our usual shortened day on the first Friday of the month.  On Friday, February 15th, our teachers and staff are participating in an all-day in-service, so students have no school.  The following Monday, February 18th, is President's Day, so enjoy your four-day weekend with your children.  On the day of Open House (the 29th), students have no school so faculty and staff can make those last minute preparations.

February is also Teacher Appreciation Month at Edgewood.  The administration, along with a month-load of work from Jonna Fagins-Powell, tries to show how much we appreciate all the teachers' hard work.  The Parent Association also provides a week of glorious food and special events for all of us, and it is especially appreciated during this busy "Open House" month!

Mrs. Wile, Mrs. Fraser, Mrs. Reynolds, and I are finishing up the WASC (Western Association of Schools and Colleges) report before the Accreditation Committee visits our school for four days in April.  We are very proud of our school and hope our visitors recognize what a special place Edgewood is!

I urge all of you to get involved and join us at the Parent Association meetings held on the second Thursday of each month.  Last month our first grade teachers presented information about academic expectations of first grade.  Future guest speakers include Mr. Rob Chandler (CEO of Fairmont), Mrs. Letson and Mr. Powell (PE teachers and coaches), Miss Harper (Music and Drama), and Mark Hobbs and Kari White (Science).

As always, my door is open and I thank you for your support.
